Cannabis Nursing has been recognized as a specialty and is identified by the American Cannabis Nurses Association (ACNA) as a specialty nursing practice focused on the care of health care consumers seeking education and guidance in the therapeutic use of cannabis. The Therapeutic Use of Cannabis is the use of cannabis products for health, healing and wellness purposes. It is personal and subjective to each consumer with objective criteria being improvement in one of the five health domains - biological, mental, emotional, spiritual and social without negatively impacting any of the other health domains. Cannabis nursing involves carefully evaluating the potential side effects, adverse reactions, and health conditions or concerns that may arise from the use of high-THC cannabis products. Cannabinoid Hyperemesis Syndrome (CHS), characterized by symptoms like cyclical vomiting relieved by hot showers, was only identified in the late 1990s. While modern high-THC cannabis is often blamed, this oversimplifies the issue. No cases of CHS have been linked to CBD-rich (chemotype III) or balanced THC/CBD (chemotype II) cannabis, suggesting chemotypes may play a role. Research is limited, but a 2021 study by Dr. Russo suggests CHS could result from a gene-environment interaction triggered by high THC levels in genetically predisposed individuals. Contamination of cannabis plants by hop latent viroid is another possible factor. Understanding CHS requires deeper investigation beyond current assumptions.
