Send a question. Suggest a topic. https://askapsychiatrist.info/questions The connection between cannabis, psychosis and schizophrenia has long been suspected and is being debated now more than ever, as many states move towards legalizing marijuana. With these changes, it’s time for us to review the evidence of the links between marijuana use and what it can do to our mental health, particularly in young users with developing brains. Cannabis can cause psychosis. Cannabis-induced psychosis is caused by THC. This talk will explain what what happens in psychosis. It will also list the evidence of cannabis-induced psychosis and explain the biochemistry of cannabis-induced psychosis. Psychosis is a symptom. Psychosis can occur in many different conditions. Schizophrenia is one of the conditions that can have psychosis as a symptom. Many studies show that schizophrenia is significantly more likely to develop among people who use marijuana repeatedly. Whether cannabis can cause schizophrenia (or whether, for example, people who will eventually develop schizophrenia are more likely to use cannabis) can't be proven in a clinical study (because that kind of clinical study would be unethical). But a number of findings should raise concerns: - it's biochemically possible for cannabis do cause the biochemical changes seen in schizophrenia - it's possible to create schizophrenia-like neurophysiological and behavioral changes in animals given THC or cannabis extracts - higher cannabis use in human populations is associated with higher risks of schizophrenia - if someone develops psychosis from their use of cannabis, their odds of later developing schizophrenia jump to about 1 in 3. This talk ends with some interesting questions from the audience, such as what information should be given about the risks of cannabis at the point of sale, and what is the link between cannabis use and suicide. Make sure to share this video with your friends and family to spread awareness of the risks of maraijuana usage, so that everyone can make an informed decision about whether or not marijuana is right for them.

In today's video, Blake and Tim go into the cannabis extraction process in detail. How a product is extracted from the plant will greatly affect both the potency and quality of the medicine you are getting. Tim, a QMP in Utah and founder of https://utahmarijuana.org, often recommends CBD for beginners in the program as a way to ease into cannabis use. A product where CBD and THC are working together to maintain balance in the endocannabinoid system can be just the ticket for certain conditions. Blake, Chief Scientific Officer of https://zionmedicinal.com, a Utah CBD and cannabis company, has dedicated much of his life to marijuana research and discovering how marijuana works due to personal motivation with his daughter’s seizure disorder. In addition to teaching us all about CBD and CBD dosage, watch as Blake touches on the specific cannabinoids that cause some of the benefits of marijuana, as well as marijuana side effects. Tim will handle things from a provider standpoint. In his clinic, KindlyMD, Tim has recommended Medical Marijuana to countless patients this year – remember that in Utah, marijuana has only recently been legalized for medical use. Tim will educate patients daily on how to use marijuana and what to expect when marijuana effects kick in. Subscribe to Discover Marijuana to make sure you don’t miss an episode. Potcast S2 E11 - Forget THC - Let’s Talk Terpenes THC has been dominating the conversation around cannabis since legalization, but it’s starting to lose steam as people realize this plant has much more to offer than its potency.  That’s why this episode of The Potcast with Ross Rebagliati is dedicated to terpenes – the natural chemical compounds that not only contribute to the flavours and aromas of your favourite cannabis cultivars, but may also contribute to how they make you feel… things that should factor into your purchasing decisions.
